Dog Breed Quiz Animal Planet

Is a shorthair chihuahua right for me?

I’ll raise it to be calmer, like a chihuahua i knew once. I can keep it indoors in the winter with a sweater for extra warmth. I’m a teenager and i’m doing research still after years (and i literally mean years) of having interest in the breed. I’ll be able to file it nails down (too scared to cut them). I’ll give it love and plenty of attention. I’ll keep it up to date with vet visits and shots, and “fix” it. I have a potty schedule set that was approved by you guys already. I took a dog breed quiz on animal planet and got 96% Chihuahua. What do you think?
I’m 13. My parents pay for dog food already for our other dog. I make good money a year and do babysitting and have a small buisness.

Just because you can take care of a dog in theory, doesn’t mean that one in practice is a good idea.

You’re a teenager, you’ll be going off to school at the end of the summer and in a few years you’ll be going off to college. You can’t take care of the dog when you are there.

Dogs cost money. Keep in mind grooming, food, toys, vet bills. It adds up quickly.

Could you handle it bonding to someone in your house rather then you? You may pick out the dog but Chihuahuas are notoriously a one person dog and simply tolerate the others that are in the house.

And you don’t get a choice in who it bonds too, especially since you’ll be at school.

It’s great you want a dog. But maybe try a family dog first before you go for your own, especially given your age. If you are hunting for a great little dog try a Maltese or a poodle.
