How do you clip a difficult dog’s nails?

My dog HATES for us to touch her paws or anyone else. We simply can’t clip her nails. She always pulls away before we even start clipping and if we clip one, (not ANYWHERE close to the quick, barely at the tip of the nail) she just starts squirming around wildly like she is about to get murdered! lol im serious. we’ve tried using the new shaving nail thing, Peticure, i think, and she hates that too. She just thinks it’ll hurt. we’ve tried clipping while she has treats in her mouth but that can only last so long before she realizes we’re clipping her nails. Even when we brought her to the groomers, they couldn’t even get all of them. I’m starting to wonder now if it’s because of her age. She’s about 15, but still acts like a puppy, so I just don’t understand. Please tell me what to do, so she doesn’t have to suffer with her nails too long!

Take the dog into the bathroom with you and close the door. When they learn that they have no escape, they usually give in quickly. Don’t baby the dog, but tell them in a calm and level voice that they are a good dog, and talk to them (not baby talk) during the process. When you are done, open the door and make a huge fuss about how great they are, give them pets and love and maybe even a treat. My Shepard x Husky was horrible the first time I ever did his, he was a rescue, about 3 years old, so I have no idea about his past traumas. My first try, I ended up with a 3 inch gash (and now a scar) down my back from him frantically trying to climb over me. I did not give in (that makes them think they can get away with it), and dragged him off to the bathroom to do them. A year later, he is fantastic, he follows me into the bathroom willingly (although he still wont let me do them anywhere else), and is probably the best of my 4 dogs to do!

It’s a rare human who actually enjoys clipping a dog’s nails; and rarer still, the dog who enjoys it.
