Water Fountains are More Than Just Pretty Decorations

What thoughts come to mind when you think about indoor wall fountains? Perhaps you think about a symbol, a monument to beauty and grace. Maybe you think about the smells of fresh water cascading down a sun baked stone face. Or maybe you think about the soothing sounds, the gentle relaxing noises of water trickling and splashing down. No matter what you’re thinking, your thoughts of water fountains are likely pleasant ones, and it’s easy to see why. Frankly, there’s nothing not to like about interior wall waterfalls. They sound wonderful, they are stunningly beautiful, and they are even functional and healthy.

Yes, Indoor wall fountains are healthy. This was likely not the first thing you thought of when I asked you to think about water fountains, as the health benefits of these aquatic decorations are largely overlooked. But it’s true: water fountains have been shown to have a number of modest physical and mental health benefits, from stress and pain relief to environmental temperature regulation.

First of all, the sound of flowing water is much more than just a “pretty noise.” The trickling, splashing sound of falling water actually produces a multi-frequency sound called “white noise” that muffles and sometimes completely cancels out other sounds within its frequency range. This means you won’t have to put up with traffic jam clamor, noisy neighbors, barking or yipping dogs next door, or the electric hum of overhead power lines. Now you can site back, relax, and soak up the soothing sounds of water splashing over carved stone and rocks. Improve relaxation and release the everyday stress by muffling the obnoxious noises in your environment.

The splashing action of water fountains also purifies the air you breathe, by breaking water molecules into negative ions. These negative ions use their negative polarity to attract and bond with positively charged particles in the air, effectively dampening and neutralizing them. This means you no longer have to worry about breathing in unwanted dust particles, toxins, allergens, and bioaerosols every time you breathe, you wall fountain will take care of them for you.

Another benefit of indoor wall fountains is humidity control. Installing such a fountain generally increases local humidity by a factor of two percent. That may not seem like much, but it may make all the difference between a cold and dry environment and a comfortable one. Human beings need a certain amount of humidity in their environment to be comfortable: roughly fifty percent. This humidity moisturizes the skin and makes the area around you feel a little warmer. A new indoor water fountain may help to improve you skins health and make your home more comfortable.

These effects are usually fairly slight, so an indoor water fountain is certainly not a cure-all. But if your home needs just a little more comfort, or if you could use just a little more relaxation and stress relief, or if you just want to breathe cleaner air, an indoor water fountain may be just the thing you’re looking for.

How effective are filtered pet water fountains for very large breed dogs that slobber a lot, like a Mastiff?

I share a house with someone who owns a very large breed dog. The dog is wonderful, but every time he drinks out of a regular bowl with fresh water he leaves a significant amount of his saliva in the water. It’s time consuming to rinse and refill the water bowl several times a day. Are any of the filtered pet fountains on the market worth the money? The ones that I saw after doing a quick web search were around $100. That’s a lot of money to spend on something that could break. There would also be the additional cost of replacement filters and the fountains do require manual cleaning. (The stainless steel water bowls that we have now go right into the dishwasher.) I welcome all comments or answers.

I don’t know a single Mastiff owner who uses one, so I have to assume that they’re not too effective. (I did a search in the Mastiff community of which I’m a member, and I found no one who uses a drinking fountain. Everyone just changes the water out a bunch of times a day, except for one person who uses a spigot outdoors and another who has a special automatic flushing toilet just for her Mastiffs.) I would think the thick, slimy gobs of slobber might sort of clog it up, you know? I don’t think it’d be able to stand up to a Mastiff very well. It sounds quite expensive, so no, I would not bother spending the money on it.
